Scootboot Launches The TheraRide: The First Therapy Hoof Boot Designed for Riding

Scootboot, a world leader in hoof boot technology, has launched the TheraRide, the first hoof boot designed for both therapy and riding.

This dual-purpose design eliminates the need for horse owners to buy separate therapeutic and riding boots.

Traditional therapy boots are often bulky and restrictive, limiting a horse’s ability to move naturally.

The TheraRide allows a horse during rehabilitation to move reducing any pain and also ridden horses that need additional therapeutic support.

It also features an interchangeable pad system, enabling owners and hoof care professionals to customise support based on a horse’s individual needs.

Cheryl Gray, Chief Executive Officer of Scootboot, said the launch of the TheraRide is an exciting milestone for the company:

"The TheraRide marks a new chapter for Scootboot. We have built our reputation on innovation in hoof care, and this product is the next step in that journey.

"It is important for us to continue offering solutions that make a real difference to horses and their owners. The TheraRide is unlike anything else on the market - by combining therapeutic support with freedom of movement, we are giving horses a better chance at recovery and long-term soundness.

"For us, this is more than just a new product. It is about leading the barefoot movement and supporting owners through every stage of their horse’s hoof health."

A First-of-Its-Kind Solution in Hoof Care

Unlike existing therapy boots, which are primarily designed for stall rest or limited movement, the TheraRide provides support while allowing for unrestricted motion.

Horses recovering from injuries or transitioning to barefoot can continue their rehabilitation without switching to a different boot for daily activity.

The adjustable pad system is designed to accommodate a range of hoof conditions, including:

  • Transitioning from metal shoes to barefoot

  • Thin soles

  • Damaged soles from previous laminitic events

  • Bruised soles

  • Navicular syndrome

  • Pedal osteitis

  • Ringbone

  • Sidebone

A Rider’s Experience with TheraRide

Tasmanian Equestrian rider Bronte Wallis recently trialled the TheraRide, and shared her experience using the TheraRide to rehabilitate her horse:

"The TheraRide played a crucial role in my horse’s recovery from laminitis and provided much-needed support for another horse dealing with crushed bars.

"The level of cushioning was outstanding. Before using the TheraRide, my horse was lame and in significant discomfort, but the added support made a noticeable difference in his movement and comfort.

"What impressed me most was how lightweight the TheraRide is and how I can turn out my horse in the paddock 24/7. It provided the support my horse needed while still allowing him to move freely. He became more confident in landing heel-first, which showed me that the boot was effectively relieving his heel pain.

"I was even able to lunge him in them, thanks to the shock absorption and stability they provide."

Key Benefits of TheraRide

  • Dual Purpose Design: TheraRide is the only therapeutic boot on the market suitable for both therapy and riding, supporting horses through recovery and activity.

  • Transitioning to Barefoot: TheraRide supports your horse on the journey from shod to barefoot.

  • Rehab from Hoof Pathologies: Assists recovery from hoof pathologies such as navicular, pedal osteitis, ringbone and sidebone.

  • Sole Relief: Provides relief for thin or bruised soles and aids recovery for damaged soles due to previous laminitic events.

  • Shock Absorption: Features a specially designed pad of thermoplastic polyurethane that absorbs shock and minimises concussion to the hoof capsule and joints.

  • Ideal for Older Horses: Maintains mobility in ageing horses, reducing arthritis progression and extending their active years.

  • Enhanced Durability and Comfort: Water-resistant gaiters prevent potential rubbing, while the open design provides excellent ventilation and drainage.

A New Approach to Equine Rehabilitation

The launch of the TheraRide comes as more horse owners move away from traditional metal shoes in favour of barefoot solutions.

The shift toward natural hoof care is driven by a growing awareness of the long-term benefits of barefoot management, including improved circulation, healthier hoof growth, and reduced strain on joints, tendons, and ligaments.

However, transitioning from metal shoes to barefoot can be challenging, particularly for horses with weakened soles, underrun heels, or a history of hoof issues.

Dave MacDonald, a former farrier and the designer of the TheraRide, explained his approach to developing the boot:

"As a farrier, I saw firsthand how difficult it is to balance protection and movement when rehabilitating a horse or transitioning them to barefoot. Most therapy boots are bulky, heavy, and restrict motion, but movement is a key part of recovery.

"I wanted to design something that provided cushioning and support, while still allowing the horse to walk, trot, and even be ridden. The TheraRide fills a major gap in hoof care."
