Sonya Crawford's Transformative Journey as a Scootboot Fitter: From Rehabilitation to Regional Clinics

How It All Began

My journey started two years ago during the rehabilitation of my thoroughbred, who was suffering from laminitis, recurring hoof abscesses, seedy toe, and trouble retaining shoes. I was determined to find a solution that prioritised his comfort and long-term hoof health. That’s when I discovered Scootboots.

I completed the Scootboot online modules and invested in a sizing kit. Initially, it was just about fitting boots for my own horses, but I quickly saw the need for in-person sizing services in the South Coast and Canberra regions. Horse owners were eager for help navigating correct fit and function, and I had the skills and passion to offer it.

With a background as a stable hand and as both an equine and small animal veterinary nurse, I found my true calling in hoof care, rehabilitation, and owner education. Helping horses heal and thrive, while supporting their owners through the process, is where I truly feel at home.

Expanding My Services

What began as a personal project quickly grew. I’ve since travelled to areas including the Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, and Northern Beaches in Sydney to meet demand. I genuinely enjoy travelling to meet clients and their lovely horses, it’s a huge part of what makes this role so rewarding.

Now, working at Horseland, I’m also available in-store to chat with customers about Scootboots and hoof care. It's been a great way to stay connected with the community and offer guidance on the spot.

In December, I decided to run an independent promotion where every fitting client booked that month went into a draw to win a Scootboot rug (which I personally purchased and delivered to a very happy winner!). I love offering small extras, like free coloured front straps for bulk orders or trialling new products like the multipurpose gaiters to gain feedback and create content for my social pages.

One particularly special experience was fitting the horses of the owner of Poseidon Animal Health. We had an insightful discussion about how gut health impacts hoof growth and strength. I was even offered an affiliate code to help owners access Poseidon's range, but chose to decline due to my new full-time role at Horseland, ensuring no conflict of interest.

Building Oaksona Equine Services

The positive feedback from clients has been so encouraging, and it's inspired me to officially establish my own business: Oaksona Equine Services. Through it, I can combine all the knowledge, products, and support I offer into one platform.

I’m affectionately known in the Canberra region as “The Scootboot Lady,” and honestly, I wear the title with pride. My dream is to one day represent Scootboots at events such as endurance rides, the Scenic City ride, the Canberra Royal, or regional agricultural shows. I’d love to be able to speak publicly about hoof health, rehabilitation, and the importance of correct boot fitting at events across the equine industry.

Looking Ahead

Being a Scootboot Fitter has opened up doors I never expected. It's not just about boots, it's about improving horse welfare, empowering owners, and fostering a stronger equine community. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had so far and excited for what’s ahead.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey. It means the world to be able to do what I love and share that passion with fellow horse owners.
